I was born in Liverpool, but have lived in Scotland since 1978. In 1988 I started to use a 35mm SLR, and since that time I have been striving to constantly improve my photography. I am largely self-taught, but took a course in B&W darkroom printing in the 90’s, and constantly study the work of other photographers. I am also an active member of Musselburgh Camera Club, and now shoot most of my images on a professional Nikon Digital SLR, although I also use a medium format film rangefinder.
I enjoy the challenge of trying to arrange all the components of a photograph so that they become more than just a record of a place or event, but capture the essence of the subject – the features that attracted the eye of the viewer in the first place. Many of my images are of locations in Scotland, and I believe that our coasts and islands, including the Orkneys and Hebrides are as beautiful as anywhere on earth. For the past 13 years I have also been travelling regularly to Japan and have become fascinated by this amazing country of contradictions, where history and 21st Century technology co-exist side by side.
The work on this site features a cross-section of my recent personal work, covering mostly landscapes and travel images. My photography has also been used for commercial marketing material.
